Back to School Night is September 10!

Read more to learn everything you wanted to know (and more!) about this year's Back to School Night!

September 5, 2014

Dear Parents / Guardians,

Back to School Night (BTSN) is quickly approaching on Wednesday, September 10. We look forward to having you visit our school, meet your child’s teachers, and learn more about the classes your child is taking this year!

Although there are a few meetings prior to BTSN (scroll to the end for more information), the full BTSN program will begin at 5:45 p.m. in the cafeteria with a brief PTA meeting.  At 6:00 p.m. you will be “dismissed” to your child’s homeroom to prepare for visits to his/her teachers.  Please review the details below to make the night an enjoyable, successful one for all.

What time should I arrive?

Although the evening begins at 5:45 p.m., parking will be challenging. With that, we kindly request that you reserve the media center parking lot for the faculty.  We suggest that you arrive a few minutes early and that you carpool, if possible.  You may also park at Pointers Run Elementary School. Thanks!

Who should attend?

We know you may be wondering whether or not to bring your child with you. Although he/she may want to attend, we respectfully request that if at all possible, you come to Back to School Night without your child.  Space is limited and if this year is like years past, the hallways will be filled with adults moving in various directions to get to class on time.  Don’t worry about getting lost – staff and student volunteers will be available to help you arrive to your child’s classrooms, so you will not need to bring your student to help guide you.  You will also receive a map of the school to help you find your way to classes.  Thank you in advance - we appreciate your support!

What should I bring?

Your child’s schedule will be waiting for you in his/her homeroom when you arrive to school, so you do not need to bring a copy of the schedule with you.  You may want to bring something so that you can take notes, if needed, however.  In addition, the PTA is sponsoring a coat drive for Howard county students and families.  Fall is a great time for closet cleaning and giving!  Please bring your clean and wearable donations (new or gently used coats, hats and gloves) to Back to School Night – thank you in advance for your donations!   Finally, the PTA will have a membership and spirit wear table. Don’t forget your checkbook if you want to join the PTA or purchase CMS gear.

What should I do when I arrive?

When you arrive, please proceed to the cafeteria for the PTA meeting that will begin promptly at 5:45 p.m.  As you enter the cafeteria, be sure to visit the tables on display: Food Services, PTA membership and PTA spirit wear.

If you arrive after 6:00 p.m. we ask that you go directly to your child’s homeroom. Our Back to School Night Program begins promptly at 6:05 p.m. in homeroom where you will receive your child’s schedule and watch the “Daily Announcements”.

What is the schedule for the evening?

The PTA meeting will kick-off the evening at 5:45 p.m.  Once concluded, you will continue the evening in your child’s homeroom class. The time schedules for each grade are below, but your child’s individual schedule will be available to you when you arrive to your child’s homeroom. During homeroom, “Daily Announcements” will be broadcast on the television – just like the students experience each day.  Please be sure to arrive to your child’s homeroom on time, as the announcements will begin promptly at 6:10 p.m.   After the announcements, you will be “dismissed to class” at 6:25 p.m.  Classes will be 8 minutes in length with a short 2-minute transition time between classes.

What else can I expect?

Attending Back to School Night is an exciting time for students, parents and teachers.  We look forward to having you visit our school, and we are excited that you will have the opportunity to visit your child’s classrooms and listen to a presentation from the professionals who teach them.  We respectfully request that you refrain from recording or photographing the presentations.

Our staff members will have a brief amount of time to share the information they feel is the most important for you to know.  Because time is limited, there is not time for individual conversations or conferences.  If there is something that you would like to address with a teacher, we want to give you the time and attention you deserve which cannot be achieved on Back to School Night.  If this is the case, we respectfully request that you either contact the teacher directly or that you contact the student services (guidance) office to arrange for a conference.

We look forward to seeing you Wednesday!

Sincerely,

Melissa Shindel
Principal
